How to Clean Flat Back Earrings Without Damaging the Finish

Flat backs spend their whole life against skin, product and pillowcases. Over time that builds a film that dulls metal and makes stones look flat. The fix is almost always gentler than people expect.

First, Know What You Should Not Clean

A healing piercing is not the time to take jewelry out for a scrub. If the piercing is still new, leave the jewelry in place and follow your piercer's aftercare. Everything below is for healed piercings.

  • Step 1: Take the Piece Out Over a Soft Surface :

Work over a folded towel or a closed drain. Flat back posts and tiny tops are very easy to lose, and a hard sink is unforgiving.

  • Step 2: Use Warm Water and a Drop of Mild Soap

A small bowl of warm water with a drop of fragrance-free soap does the job. Skip bleach, harsh chemicals and anything abrasive, since they can dull the finish and loosen settings.

  • Step 3: Brush Gently, Especially Around Stones

A soft baby toothbrush reaches under bezels and between pavé stones, where residue collects. Light pressure is enough. Scrubbing hard does not clean better and can wear the finish.

  • Step 4: Rinse and Dry Completely

Rinse in clean water and pat dry with a lint-free cloth. Leave nothing damp before the piece goes back in.

A Healing Note

  1. Clean jewelry does not replace good habits. Wash your hands before touching your ears, keep hair products away from the area, and see your piercer if a healed piercing becomes red or sore after you swap jewelry.
  2. If you are choosing pieces that are easy to keep clean, bezel settings protect stones from catching, and pavé flat backs give you sparkle with a smooth back against the ear. Browse the Ara and Selene collections to find the one that suits your stack.
