Contra Conch Ear Stack Ideas: 5 Ways to Style It

The contra conch sits in the middle of the ear, on the ridge between your conch and your helix. That makes it the easiest piercing to build a stack around: it links your lobes to your upper cartilage. Here are five ways to style it, from one quiet stud to a fully curated ear.

New to the piercing? Start with our contra conch guide for pain, healing time and sizing.

1. The quiet single

One small diamond in the contra conch and nothing else in the cartilage. Keep the lobes simple, with a stud or a small hoop. Because so few people have this piercing, a single stone there looks deliberate rather than minimal. Try the Selene ($600).

2. Contra conch + flat

Two studs one above the other: the flat sits on the upper inner ear, and the contra conch sits just below it on the ridge. Mix shapes and sizes so they don’t look like twins. A heart-shaped Ara Bezel ($600) in the contra conch under a round stud in the flat is an easy pairing.

3. Contra conch + conch

Pierce both and you get depth, with one stud on the ridge and one in the bowl of the ear just inside it. Give them different finishes so they read as separate pieces: a pavé top in one and a single solitaire in the other. The Selene Pavé ($600) works well as the sparkly half.

4. Contra conch + helix hoop

A hoop on the outer rim frames the contra conch stud inside it. This is the most balanced of the five because the hoop adds movement and the stud stays still. Keep the hoop slim so the stud stays the focus.

5. The heart moment

Put a heart in the contra conch and keep everything else round. The middle of the ear is where people look first, so a shaped stone there becomes the signature of the whole stack. The Ara ($800, lab-grown or natural) is made for this, and we cover more placements in where to wear a heart stud.

Three rules for any contra conch stack

Keep it small: 3 to 4mm tops suit the narrow ridge. A large stone there crowds everything around it.

Stick to one metal: one consistent metal lets the shapes do the talking. If you do want to mix, here’s how to mix gold and white gold earrings.

Leave breathing room: one empty space between pieces makes a stack look curated instead of crowded. Our luxury ear stack guide walks through planning a full ear.

Healing first: build around a contra conch only once it has fully healed, which is usually 6 to 12 months. Add new piercings one or two at a time, and check with your piercer before changing jewelry in a healing piercing.
